Southland Hospital in Invercargill and Lakes District Hospital in Queenstown.

What are the sizes of your hospital(s) in terms of:

Built in 2004, Southland hospital is a 181 bed, secondary level base facility which employs approximately 1400 staff. SDHB also owns and operates the smaller 22 bed Lakes District Hospital in Queenstown employing Medical Officers, nursing and allied health staff. 
 
Southland District Health Board continues to attract a mix of both senior consultants and junior doctors because the organisation offers very real opportunities to pursue specialist career paths and also provides exposure to a broad range of pathology with a high level of practice, and for junior doctors, good on-the-job hands-on experience supported by senior staff.
 
Services to its 107,000 population include acute medical, surgical and orthopaedics, an Intensive Care Unit, 24 hour emergency department, paediatrics, maternity plus rehabilitation and therapy services.   It is extremely well equipped and features digital radiology technology with MRI and CT capability as well as an electronic patient management system. 
 
Southland and Lakes District Hospital see approximately 36,000 Emergency Department attendances per annum. With approximately 17,500 admissions and discharges per annum, 58,000 outpatient appointments and 1500 births. .
 
Southland Hospital is also a teaching hospital within the Dunedin School of Medicine group.

What teaching opportunities are available for RMOs?

Formal and informal teaching opportunities are available including weekly Grand Rounds for all medical staff. Weekly protected teaching time for all House Officers over and above department teaching. Departmental teaching is provided in a structured manner through journal club, audit, mortality and morbidity review and xray meetings. 

Many departments are accredited for training with their respective colleges for basic and advanced trainees including medicine, general surgery, urology, anaesthetics, and orthopaedics. 

ACLS courses are provided on site to all medical staff with instructors available on site for extra tuition. Ultrasound is used in the emergency department and an instructor is also available for this. 

All trainees have the ability and supported to attend courses that are requirements for their training and travel and costs as well as study leave is provided. Junior doctors who are not yet involved in College training programmes are also supported to attend appropriate courses. 

Junior doctors in obstetrics and gynaecology and paediatrics are supported and encouraged to undertake the diplomas of O&G and of paediatrics through the University of Otago.

What parking facilities are available?

Parking is available on-site in the hospital car park free of charge.

What IT systems does your DHB have (eg. electronic discharges, electronic radiology requests etc.)?

PACS digital radiology, IPM electronic patient management system, EDIS emergency department electronic patient management system, 1.5T MRI Scanner, 16 slice CT Scanner alongside xray, ultrasound and nuclear medicine capabilities. There is access to interventional radiology and ERCP.

What other support structures / facilities are available for SMO / RMOs (childcare, gyms, security etc.)?

All junior doctors are supported with three weeks free accommodation upon arrival.

An RMO Lounge is available and all doctors have designated office space and computer access. 

The Southland DHB Health Science Library supports the clinical care, management, health promotion, education and research work of all staff based at Southland Hospital. The library is proactive in encouraging the use of evidence based and current information for work and study, and sees professional learning as a life long activity. The library is open and staffed from 8.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday, excepting public holidays. 24 7 access is available. The collection covers medicine, nursing, allied health, psychology, and management. They online and hardcopy books and journals. The library subscribes to a wide range of clinical literature databases some with full text. They satisfy requests for resources not held in the Southland DHB library by purchase, or via inter library loan using various services within New Zealand or overseas. It is very rare for them not to be able to satisfy a request, so despite our location you can get access to the worlds health science literature.

Southland District Health Board also owns holiday homes available in Te Anau, Queenstown and Arrowtown which are exclusively for the use of hospital staff. These are available for rent at a very reasonable rate, well below market rates, and are excellent ways to explore the region in all seasons whether it be skiing in the winter, wine tasting, undertaking water pursuits, outdoor adventure activities or just relaxing. 

What are the accommodation options in your DHB's area?

Many accommodation options are readily available in the Invercargill area and the recruitment team are only too happy to assist with advice around this. Options for furnished or un-furnished accommodation range from apartment living, shared accommodation, unit, free standing houses or lifestyle blocks with attached land. Southland is one of the most affordable places in New Zealand to rent or own property.

Southland District Health Board owns flats and houses directly adjacent to the hospitals as well as having many private providers in the community to provide temporary accommodation to relocating staff.

Southland offers a fantastic lifestyle with a low cost of living, excellent schools and a range of outdoors activities right on your doorstep. Southland District Health Board’s affordable staff holiday homes in Queenstown, Te Anau and Arrowtown make it easy to get away for weekends with family and friends to explore the region.

Invercargill city is a modern city with facilities including a brand new, international standard, indoor cycling velodrome and sporting complex; the Splash Palace swimming centre; central Queens Park, Oreti beach, golf courses, cafes, restaurants and shops to keep you entertained. Arts and cultural interests are also well catered for with the newly refurbished Civic Theatre hosting musicals and productions, museum, art galleries, a film society, chamber music society, and the popular Shakespeare in the Park annual performance in the Queen’s Park gardens.

Excellent schools; free tertiary education at the Southern Institute of Technology; cheaper house prices and short commute times in a friendly, safe community, makes Invercargill the place where you really can enjoy the good life. 
Rural Southland’s lush, green landscape is at the heart of the region’s strong agricultural economy, whilst Bluff port and the nearby aluminium smelter are also considered as two of the region’s key industries. Fly-fishing enthusiasts are well catered for; surfers enjoy the waves along the natural beauty of the rugged coastline of Colac Bay; whilst trampers and nature lovers have easy access to scenic walking tracks, including those on Stewart Island and in stunning Fiordland and the Catlins.
