What teaching opportunities are available for RMOs?

Timaru Hospital has a reputation among RMOs in NZ as being a highly rated place to work, with a very supportive management approach. Our positions require individuals with sound, broad-based clinical ability, a highly cooperative team approach, enthusiasm, excellent interpersonal skills, plus the confidence to accept a substantial degree of clinical responsibility. In return we offer the opportunity for significant professional experience and development, aided largely by the size of Timaru Hospital. The absence of Registrars affords close contact between consultants and residents, increasing the potential for teaching as well as providing greater levels of responsibility and exposure to a broader range of clinical experiences, (e.g. you actually are expected to attend Theatre Sessions to assist your Consultant).

What are some of the other attractions for your DHB area?

Just two hours drive to the north is Christchurch, New Zealand’s second largest city while a drive two hours south will see you in Dunedin, the Edinburgh of the south. By air you are just one hours flight from New Zealands capital city and arguably cultural hub, Wellington.
Timaru is the largest urban centre in the region: a long established and wealthy rural service centre. Our resident population of approximately 28000 enjoy access to moderately priced real estate, excellent educational facilities and an abundance of sporting and recreational facilities, many of them of international standard.
Outside of working hours you will find Timaru and surrounding districts offer an amazing array of the outdoor pursuits for which New Zealand is famed. It sits at the doorstep of many inland lakes where sailing, waterskiing, boating, windsurfing and fishing are popular pastimes. At least five ski fields are within easy driving of Timaru itself. Whatever yours or your families interests, we challenge you will find something to satisfy them here.
Timaru offers all that is comparable to any larger centre yet without the associated hassles.
